History of SAI
24/11/08
Sigma Alpha Iota was founded June 12, 1903 at the University School of Music, Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was founded by seven upperclass and graduate students–Elizabeth Campbell, Frances Caspari, Minnie Davis Sherrill, Leila Farlin Laughlin, Nora Crane Hunt, Georgina Potts, and Mary Storrs Andersen.
Sigma Alpha Iota is an international music fraternity for women. It joined other professional fraternities in 1925 to form the Professional Panhellenic Association. As a fraternity, SAI supports numerous national and international philanthropies dedicated to furthering the love and education of music in America and around the world. For more information on the philanthropic work of SAI, check out SAI Philanthropies on the national homepage.
The open motto of the fraternity is “Vita brevis, ars longa” which means: “Life is short, but art is long”. The fraternity colors are crimson and white, and our flower is the rose.
There are currently 212 college chapters, 118 alumnae chapters, and 1 international chapter representing Sigma Alpha Iota. Over 108,000 women are sisters in SAI.
